Who Owns Your Business’s Domain Name? Do You Know What It’s Worth?

You only paid ten dollars for your domain name so who cares who owns it?  You turned it over to your web designer to register it; after all, you don’t understand a thing about the Internet and don’t have time to learn; you’ve got a business to run!

Ok, it only cost you ten dollars.  How many years have you had it?  Does it anchor a successful business website?  Yes?  And you still think it’s only worth ten dollars?  You don’t think you’d lose any business if a competitor got his hands on it?  How much do you trust your designer?

I’ll bet it’s worth more than the original ten bucks even if you don’t count the blue sky. Who knows, maybe it’s increased in value hundreds of times.  Probably not, but don’t think it’s never happened because it has!   Check it out with a domain registrar; domain name appraisals are cheap (often under five dollars).  You might be surprised at the result.  I was.

Does that necessarily mean you could sell it right then for that amount?  No; no more than you could sell your house immediately after an appraisal.  Appraisals are, for better or worse, subjective; you’ve still got to find a buyer.

But let’s look a bit more at the house analogy.  Would you put the deed to your house in the name of somebody else?  Hey, you probably know less about property law than the Internet, so why not?  No doubt some property lawyer could do a better job of looking after it if it were in his name rather than yours!

Sound like a good idea? Probably not.  Domain names are a valuable property.  This year your domain name is probably appreciating faster than your house. What a shame you don’t actually own it.
