Owning a domain name is similar to owning a house in real life – everything must be registered under your name, especially if you’re the one paying for it and maintaining it.  Some people might think that any domain can be owned in just a snap of a finger.  That is not the case.  A domain name, like your house, must be registered first before you can have a free hand on operating under the domain name.

Any internet user can register a domain name provided that they meet the conditions of an accredited registrar.  The user will also be required to disclose personal information and contact details that the registrar deems relevant.  Once the registration has been processed and approved, the one who is stated as the registrant on their records is the one who owns a domain name.  So long as the owner maintains proper use and makes correct transactions for the domain, he gets to keep his rights for the domain name.

The registrant also has the right to make the final decisions and responsibilities regarding the domain.  He can sell the site, or make transfers, so long as the domain is not expired or is still deemed registered under his name.  Aside from these freedoms, the registrant is also held liable for any legal infringes that the domain has incurred – whether intentional or not.  If the registration expires, the registrant loses all rights to the domain name and the registrar is free to place it available for other interested parties.

People can also check who owns a domain name by doing a WHOIS search on websites of accredited domain name registrars.  By doing this search, users can have access to information regarding domain name owners or registrants and contact details.
