What’s Reseller Web Hosting?
There are two major types of web hosting you might run in to during your searching; shared hosting and reseller hosting. There is really only one major difference between these two types of accounts. While both account types share server assets with other users, when you get a reseller hosting account you purchase a larger portion so that you can resell those on to other users.
The great thing about a reseller account is that you don’t need to know how to run a server at all. The company you buy the reseller account from takes care of maintaining the server software. Any time you have a problem related to the server you just contact the host and they’ll take care of it.
Since reseller hosting is targetted at users who have multiple accounts that need hosting, most users won’t notice any benefit from them. By buying a larger portion of the server you are generally able to save quite a bit of money over buying individual shared accounts.
Since you can setup your own packages, this can also be a great way to start your own hosting company. A number of companies even offer free or reduced-price billing and support software if you sign up for a reseller account with them. You don’t need to deal with server problems, just finding customers and providing support to them.
You also don’t have to worry about the maintenance of the server, since the web host should have this covered. You should also get technical support included with your account.
A big drawback is that if you are unable to solve a customer’s problem yourself you will need to contact your host and wait for a reply. This can become a lengthly process and is one of the major reasons some customers are unwilling to buy hosting from a reseller. You should be able to handle most problems yourself and with proper support protocols it shouldn’t be a big problem.
You might already be familiar with how to administer a server using the control panel. Since reseller accounts normally come with restricted privledges this can make fixing some problems much tougher. You can see if your host is willing to give you more access, but don’t count on it. Most will be appreciative that you show initiative in wanting to fix issues on your own though.
In my opinion reseller hosting is worth the money. It is a super step in selling web hosting and if done properly enables a small business to generate a profit from reselling shared hosting accounts.
